Well, our plan was to hunt out some caches on the way to Hobart on the way to ‘The Special Event’. We looked on this Event as ’special’, because geo-cachers all over Australia, would be attending Events in their home states at the very exact same time!
Unfortunately the weather was against us. We were forced to by-pass our previously planned ‘Four Corners’, ‘Jordan’ and ‘Little Quoin’ due to torrential rain, hail and ‘Subaru aqua-planing!’. Even though we left Launceston at a respectable time, we still managed to arrive late for ‘The Event’. (After all this time, we thought we could now call ourselves seasoned geo-cachers?? .. Not so!! Even armed with GPS co-ords and a map, it still took us over half an hour to find the area where we were mean’t to be!! .. Aargh! )
The next day (Sunday) heralded some warm Hobart sunshine and even though we slept in and had a late brekkie, we were on the road soon after 10.00am. Our first find was one in the Cheesy Pigs series, ‘Summer’ . We set off along the path/boardwalk to find this one, with Mr Waterwells very quickly issuing dire warnings to Mrs Waterwells .. “Don’t you dare stop and talk with anyone walking their dog!” … Oh dear, this left me with absolutely no-one to stop and chat with! (Ummm, does this say that Mr Waterwells knows me too well??). But guess what! After finding the cache, signing the log and admiring the magnificent view, guess which one of ‘the Waterwells half’ stopped to chat with a dog owner on the way back to our car?? T’wasn’t me! Need I say more?? ..
From here, our next stop was ‘Not An Ocean Cliff Cache’! After a couple of wrong turnings off the main road, we eventually found the way in to yet another ‘oh so peaceful’ area of Hobart. Walkers and cyclists abounded, and yet quite amazingly, they all added to the peaceful, laid-back atmosphere of this area.
From here we headed to ‘Wild Party Animals #1′. The terrain rating for this cache is two stars. It’s a short, very steep up-hill climb to get to GZ and the views on the way are absolutely superb.
Next stop was ‘Save My Bacon’! Hahaha! A huge belly laugh!! What else can we say? ..
The Domain was our next stop with an easy pickup of ‘Domain Secrets’. My sis-in-law from Sydney and moi had trudged and thoroughly enjoyed finding all the waypoints back in May of this year, only to eventually find that the actual cache had been muggled by wildlife. (Geocaching hint! Always keep all co-ords!! haha)
We really enjoyed ‘Pete’s Gardens and Gadgets’. The last time we took a wander through The Gardens was a long, long time ago and amazingly, the peacefulness of this area has not changed one iota! It’s good to see now the extent of the upgrading of these gardens in order to cater for those with disabilities. (Says she who has worked within the medical industry for many years!)
‘River Crossing’ was next on our agenda. ‘Inside terrain info’ allowed us to park very close to GZ and we soon had the prize in our hot little hands. A very tricky and very daring hide!
Across the bridge to The Eastern Shore and ‘Ministry of Culture’, the next cache on our agenda. Easily found, when we realised that we’d actually parked almost right next to the cache!! ..
Now back to our hotel, with intentions of picking up ‘Railway Roundabout’ and ‘Cheesy Pigs - Spring’ on the way! Aaaaarh!! Not so!! We hunted high and low for ‘Spring’, and even after following the geo-trails, we still could not find it!
It was the same with ‘Railway Roundabout’. After resorting to the clue, we still couldn’t find it! (Sheeeez, are we losers or what! …. everyone else seems to have found it?? …
)
After some inside info at dinner from fellow geo-cachers, we set out again the next morning with the knowledge that we’d fairly surely have these two caches ‘in the bag’ very quickly! Aaaaargh!! .. Not so again!! After a few minutes of searching, we still couldn’t find ‘Railway Roundabout’ and ‘Spring’ turned out to be ‘Muggle Central’. Not a hope, not a chance!!
Onwards to ‘Ancanthe’, an area that we’d passed many times before, when our daughter was living in Lenah Valley. We’d often wondered about ‘the building and it’s history’ and we thank you Snuva, for actually ‘forcing’ us to stop, to smell the roses and to absorb the history!
Next stop? .. ‘Ancient Artefacts’ ..
Thankyou Caxixi for leading us to here! Before geo-caching, we had no idea this ‘area’ in Tassie even existed! (Is it well advertised?? … Is it??? ). We’re right into ‘ancient coins’, ‘pharoahs’ coffins’ ….. and everything/anything that smacks of ancient artefacts!
In fact we spent so much time at your first waypoint (to the point of almost forgetting that we were geo-cachers, supposedly collecting information), that we lost all track of time!
No time to find the final resting place of ‘Ancient Artefacts’, ‘Schools Out’ or ‘J.P.F’, so onwards up the Midlands Hwy for us! A quick stop at ‘Little Quoin’ and then a slight detour to ‘Jordan’. This cache area is well worth checking out, not so much for the actual cache/contents, but for the historical value of the surrounding area.
Onwards to ‘Four Corners’! It incorporates the Salvation Corner, The Damnation Corner, The Recreation Corner and The Temptation Corner … and it’s an absolute history delight!
From here, homeward bound and totally stuffed! ….
Hmmmm, we were instantly fully revived by Zoe and Bella, who were waiting at home to greet us!
